Juvenile Probation Officer

Responsibilities

Performs Probation Officer duties as required by state law and the Indiana Office of Court Services Probation standards.

Supervises, meets, and monitors assigned clients for compliance with court ordered conditions of community supervision. Completes risk/need assessments and develops individualized case plans which addresses behavior change strategies, identifies client needs, and makes appropriate service referrals.

Maintains current, accurate case files, including classifying offenders according to risk, recording probationer's character, attitude, behavior and compliance with probation conditions, and preparing and processing various documents. Assists in preparing statistical and other reports as required.

Conducts and prepares preliminary inquiries and/or pre-dispositional reports for court. including researching legal, social history, interviewing offenders and crime victims. Notifies court of probation violations and attending hearings, and testifying/making recommendations in court proceedings and/or to other officials as required.

Transfers supervision of offenders to other jurisdictions as requested, and supervises offenders transferred from other jurisdictions as assigned. Determines need for removing probationers from homes.

Assists in answering phones, providing information, taking messages or directing caller to appropriate department or individual.

Serves as court representative on various task forces, committees, and/or teams as assigned and/or requested.

Prepares and makes public speaking presentations to community groups as assigned.

Maintains knowledge of application in various databases that relate to juvenile case management, service referrals and out of home placements.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Baccalaureate Degree.

Must be 21 years of age.

Possession of and ability to maintain certification as a Probation Officer by Indiana Judicial Center.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of local, state and federal regulations, and standard policies and procedures of juvenile and criminal code.

Working knowledge of and ability to make appropriate referrals of probationers to treatment programs and services.

Ability to effectively supervise, direct and monitor assigned probationers to ensure proper completion of probation requirements.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, probationers and their families, attorneys, victims, community service agencies, counselors, school systems, court and law enforcement personnel, and members of the public including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to properly operate standard office equipment including, computer, telephone, and copier.

Ability to maintain accurate and organized files, and prepare detailed reports as required.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.

Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision, and work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.

Ability to provide testimony in legal proceedings.

Ability to occasionally work weekend, evening and/or extended hours, and occasionally travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight.

Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Title

Work Release Coordinator (Probation Officer)

Responsibilities

Enforces local Court orders and program rules by implementing effective policy to monitor individuals placed in programs.

Performs intake procedures for Work Release Program participants, including interviewing detainees, completing necessary paperwork, and searching for contraband. Assigns bunks, lockers, and cleaning duties to participants. Enters assessment information in computer.

Monitors program detainee activities and behaviors, ensuring compliance with program rules and regulations, and reporting all unusual activity and/or inmate grievances to appropriate department staff officer.

Compiles and prepares reports and summaries of activities of Community Corrections participants for department superiors as required.

Obtains warrants for detainees who have escaped or committed violations while outside the Community Corrections facility.

Conducts meetings with program detainees to plan and coordinate program activities and assists with employment placement of detainees, including obtaining required employee documents. Transports program participants to/from place of employment as needed.

Serves as liaison with employers of program detainees and with County Courts and Probation Departments in order to provide information and assistance and resolve problems with detainees.

Monitors offenders on Electronic Home Detention, ensuring compliance with program rules and regulations, reporting violations and submitting them to the Prosecutor's Office and the Courts.

Conducts random home and employment visits with offenders to assess compliance with program rules and regulations and reports all violations to the Courts. Administers random alcohol and drug testing.

Compiles and prepares summaries and reports for the Home Detention program as required.

Installs, monitors, and troubleshoots Electronic Home Detention monitoring equipment.
