Sixty Indiana children died as a result of abuse or neglect in 2021 and 16 of these were younger than one year old, according to a Department of Child Services report released last week.

In 2021, DCS was called to investigate 271 child fatalities, down from 281 fatalities in 2020. The department found 60 of those deaths were a direct result of maltreatment by caregivers, up from 50 deaths in the previous year, according to the report.

Of the 60 deaths, 22 were due to abuse and 38 were due to neglect.
