INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Law enforcement agencies around central Indiana will be patrolling the streets this Halloween, making sure that sex offenders who are currently on probation or parole are staying away from children.
Every agency has a different method, but they all are working to ensure that the hundreds of sex offenders in the area are not answering the door for trick-or-treaters.
“Lets talk about Halloween. Do not answer your door for any children. You probably won’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters around here, but if you do…do not answer the door,” explained a Hendricks County probation officer to an offender.
Probation officers in Hendricks County will spend their Halloween night going door-to -door, checking in with registered sex offenders who are currently on probation or parole. Making sure that the offenders know and understand that they can not participate in the busy holiday.
“We will be going door-to -door, making sure that their porch lights are out and that they are not answering the door for trick-or-treaters. We also check to make sure they are at the location they told us they would be at tonight,” said Hendricks County head probation officer Susan Bentley.
In Hendricks County, there are currently 50 people on active probation for sexual offenses who have no contact orders with kids. Marion County has 150 offenders that have no contact orders with children due to their active probation status. Those offenders must attend a mandatory meeting called Operation Halloween to make sure they are off the streets.
“We are just going to double check and make sure that they are following those conditions,” said Bentley.
