Awards Presented

June 2, 2004

The Probation Officers Advisory Board of the Judicial Conference of Indiana has awarded its “Order of Augustus” Award for 2004 to Monroe County Chief Probation Officer Linda Brady. Ms. Brady was chosen among four nominees from the 150 probation departments in Indiana.

Ms. Brady started as a substance abuse probation officer in Monroe County in 1985. She was named Chief Probation Officer by the Monroe County’s Board of Judges in 1995. Ms. Brady has worked to develop the Family Preservation Program, which provides home based services to the county’s at-risk-youth and their families; SHOCAP, a program for serious habitual juvenile offenders; and a GED program. She was also behind the development of an incentive-based program that includes house arrest and daily check-ins as alternatives to incarceration.

Ms. Brady currently serves as the District Seven Representative on the Probation Officer’s Professional Association of Indiana Executive Board. She has also served on the Probation Officers Advisory Board through the Indiana Judicial Center where she was a member of the Probation Standards sub-committee.
The Order of Augustus is an annual award presented by the Probation Officers Advisory Board to a probation officer whose commitment and personal dedication have exemplified the ideals and philosophy of John Augustus, the undisputed father of probation.

At the Annual Probation Officers Conference, the Probation Officer’s Professional Association of Indiana presented the Donald “Charley” Knepple Scholarship to Janice Wade. Ms. Wade has been an adult probation officer in Vanderburgh County for the past thirteen years. She is working on her Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of Evansville. Ms. Wade is scheduled to complete her degree this fall.

The Knepple Scholarship is given in memory of Donald “Charley” Knepple who lost his life on April 28, 1997, while performing his duties in Allen County, Indiana. In an effort to honor an outstanding professional and promote further professionalism, POPAI selected a scholarship that would encourage continued education and advanced degrees in Indiana.
