A deputy apparently left keys inside the van when he parked it at a church in the 900 block of Wallace Avenue near the deputy’s home, said Lt. Chris Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The van is used to transport prisoners to and from the Marion County Jail.

The suspect used a tool to get inside the locked and empty van, Bailey said, and drove off in it.

Police caught up with the suspect about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Wallace, Bailey said, after someone called police to report someone driving the vehicle who did not appear to be in law enforcement.

The suspect was intoxicated when police arrested him, Bailey said, on preliminary charges of theft, resisting police and public intoxication.
