Indiana leads the nation when it comes to meth lab busts, but the rise of another drug has law enforcement concerned.

Heroin has already taken root in the Wabash Valley. It’s the most addictive of illegal drugs and its deadly effects are once again emerging from the shadows.

“It’s extremely alarming,” says 1st Sgt. Robert Bays with the Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section.

For years meth has dominated local drug enforcement efforts. Detective Jim Palmer with the Vigo County Drug Task Force says that’s changing.

“In the last six years, prior to the last six months, we probably only saw two cases of heroin in Vigo County. In the last six months we’ve seen that increase to at least six or seven cases just in the last six months.”
